Frequently Asked Questions
How often do I need a smog check in California?
Most gas-powered vehicles need a smog check every two years when you renew your registration. You'll also need one when you sell or transfer a vehicle, register an out-of-state vehicle in California, or renew certain older vehicles. We can help you figure out exactly what your vehicle needs.
What happens if my car fails the smog check?
If your vehicle fails, we'll walk you through what needs to be repaired and give you an honest estimate. Once repairs are complete, we can perform a re-test. California also offers a Repair Assistance Program and financial assistance for qualifying low-income vehicle owners who need smog-related repairs.
Do I need a smog check to sell my car in California?
In most cases, yes. If you're selling a gas-powered vehicle in California, you'll typically need to provide the buyer with a valid smog certificate at the time of sale, unless the vehicle is exempt (for example, it's less than 4 years old or fully electric). We can get your smog check done quickly so your sale isn't held up.
What is a VSSI (Brake & Lamp) inspection and when do I need one?
A VSSI, or Vehicle Safety Systems Inspection, is a brake and lamp inspection required by the California DMV for salvage title, rebuilt title, and specially constructed vehicles. We check your brakes, headlights, and taillights, steering, suspension, brakes, tires, rotors, and body and issue your certified inspection report the same day.
Do I need an appointment, and how long does it take?
No appointment is necessary, walk-ins are always welcome. Most smog checks and VSSI inspections are completed same-day, with many cars finished quickly. We're open Monday through Saturday to fit your schedule.
