Mavo Smog VSSI and Registration performs California DMV-required VSSI (Vehicle Safety Systems Inspection), commonly known as a Brake and Lamp Inspection, for salvage title vehicles, rebuilt title vehicles, and specially constructed vehicles. Who needs a VSSI? The DMV requires a passing VSSI before it will register a revived salvage or junk vehicle, a specially constructed vehicle (including kit cars), a trailer rated 3,000 lbs or more, an off-highway vehicle converted for street use, and certain motorcycles. Some DMV paperwork still calls it a "brake and lamp" inspection; it's the same requirement. You don't need a VSSI to clear a fix-it ticket for a brake or light problem.

What we check: brakes and all lights, body structure, steering and suspension, tires and wheels, and the passenger compartment (seat belts, airbags, windshield), plus an on-board computer scan, an open-recall check, and a road test.

How to pass the first time: get every open recall fixed first (dealers do recall repairs free; check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls), make sure every light works, fix any airbag or tire-pressure warning light, replace a cracked windshield or worn tires, and make sure all repairs follow the manufacturer's procedures.

After the inspection: if the vehicle passes, the certificate goes to the DMV electronically and you won't need another VSSI for future renewals. If it fails, the report lists every reason, and after repairs the whole vehicle is inspected again. Most salvage and revived vehicles need a smog check too, and we can do both in the same visit.
